“It’s Lit”

So, I’ve been thinking…and I just realized not once have I ever done a blog post on one of my going-out outfits.

You’ve all seen what I wear to work, and what I wear to events, but I can’t believe that I’ve neglected to include the most important outfit of them all: the uniform.

I call it the uniform because I pretty much always wear some variation of this outfit when I go out. It’s a little more edgy and trendy because who wants to be preppy when they’re getting f’ed up? Let’s all save that for the office.

The basics of the uniform include: crop top, long necklace (usually one that has multiple chains), skirt, and sneakers. I’m not about wearing heels. Ain’t nobody got time for that. I’ll typically have my hair down but I was at the beach yesterday and was too lazy to do my hair after being in the ocean all day. So, a bun it was. I don’t typically do the bun but it worked. So I went with it.

also shoutout to @kara for ensuring everyone that I was still alive this morning

Outfit Details: NecklaceTopSkirtSneakers

I know I’ve been slacking on the pictures for you guys and I’m sorry. I’ve just been bad with my phone recently. To be honest, I don’t really like using it. Actually, snapchat usually catches the majority of my shenanigans (@mtmsky if you care to see how lit we get. Also, don’t worry, we eventually found Patrick). Other than snapchat though, there are usually too many things to see, people to meet and experiences to experience for me to be on my phone.

But I’ll work on it.

Until next time.

xoxo, Ris

I Might’ve Forgotten the Name of My Own Blog

I mean since my site is called WEARSbyris, I figured maybe (since it’s been months) it was time I put up an outfit or two for you guys. I have a couple in my arsenal and a couple more coming up that I think you’ll all be super exited about. I also decided against doing a 4th of July post just because I wasn’t sober for over 72 hours straight and took zero pictures of the weekend…I mean…because I’m still in love with last year’s outfit. But on a serious note, the outfit really didn’t change much. I also have a little spoiler alert for you guys: I’ve been collaborating with a very cool designer and I cannot wait for you all to meet him/them.

I want to start with my gala dress, mainly because people were calling me Princess Belle the entire night and I’m just not ready to let go of that yet. I’m only kidding, but not really. So for this dress, I did something I never thought I’d do in a million years: Rent the Runway. Let me clarify why I never thought I’d do this in a million years: because I’m Type A (which according to Google is a personality type characterized by ambition, high energy, and competitiveness. True). But it also means that I like to have everything planned and organized in advance. Yeah…about that…I didn’t do that this time. I’ve actually been extremely laissez-faire recently and have just sort of been making things up as I go; just going with the flow. It’s actually sort of relaxing. Also, in my defense, I really didn’t have the time to go out looking for a dress, and be down $500 in my bank account, so this is what I settled on. I was a little hesitant, rightfully so, but here’s how the whole thing went down:

  • Three weeks before gala: Hadn’t even thought about it yet.
  • Two weeks before gala: Thought, hmmm maybe I should figure out my gala dress.  But that was pretty much the extent of it.
  • One week before gala: Started to realize that I was RUNNING OUT OF TIME. Skimmed Rent the Runway a solid 17 times before deciding that I needed to do this now or never. Whipped out my credit card. Reluctantly typed in my information. Sent a prayer up to the man above. Scheduled hair and makeup.
  • Week of gala: This is when shit started to hit the fan. I was obviously tracking my order like my life depended on it…because well, it did. Everything was all good to go as planned…until that dreadful Wednesday. So, in my anxiety-ridden state, here’s the basic run-down from what I can remember: I was getting emails and notifications saying that my dress had been shipped, was en-route, and all was good in the world. But as the day progressed, the notifications started to say that the dress was delivered, but then picked back up. Like…what do you mean the dress was picked back up?? So there I was, sitting at work, heavy breathing. I was on a conference call with a partner, because of course I was, so it’s not like I could hang up. I obviously wanted to. My call finally ended and I dialed Rent the Runway. My heart was beating so fast. The minutes felt like hours. I was drumming my fingers. Someone finally picked up and I began to frantically explain my situation. Apparently UPS scanned my box wrong and sent it back to RTR. UPS, YOU HAVE ONE JOB. So, to make a long story short because this little paragraph has honestly gone on for long enough already, I got a lot of free shit.
  • Morning/Day/night of the event: I didn’t end up getting the dress until the morning of the gala. After trying it on and actually having it fit perfectly (THERE IS A GOD), I trekked my butt downtown to get my hair and makeup done. Naturally, I made friends with my hair and makeup girl because duh. I could probably tell you her life story but I doubt she’d want that so instead, just check her out on insta!(@deanbean_xo). You can see a sweet pic of the back of my head and what my hair actually looked like. Okay, moving on. The gala itself was amazing. Everything was so well run and the night flew by. I could tell you about the shenanigans we got into but it’s not relevant to clothing, so it’s probably best that I leave it out. All you guys need to know if we raised a ton of money to help fund cancer research and the night was an absolute success.

Okay, so after all of that, do I recommend RTR? Honestly, I actually do. The process was simple enough, they were accommodating and they do really take pride in their business. Do I recommend UPS, though? Not so much.

^Guys, I did a thing. I created a slideshow.

Okay, so now that we have the gala out of the way, let’s talk about my 23rd birthday brunch. First of all, who the fuck let me be an adult? I officially turned 23 on May 11, 2016 at 2:45 pm. It was a Wednesday. From what I can remember of that day, it basically consisted of a constant sugar high that I definitely didn’t need and me wondering why I was stupid enough to not take the day off from work.

My plans for the night were me just sort of praying that I’d get into bed before 9:30 pm (since it was only a goddamn Wednesday) and hanging out with my dog (because priorities).

That’s not how my day went, FYI.

I really wasn’t expecting a lot for this birthday…but it did end up being an amazing day. I got to spend the day with family, friends and my coworkers all decorated my cubicle. My diet centered around insomnia cookies and crumbs cupcakes. Our usual Wednesday afternoon meeting got cancelled in order to celebrate (which was fantastic because I probably wouldn’t have paid attention anyway).

But I mean c’mon. It was hump day for christ’s sake. Who would think that would be even a remotely good day to celebrate? No one even really likes hump day other than to say, “it’s hUMp daaaaay.” But other than that, the sad reality was that we all still had to survive two more days until freedom (aka survive two more days until we could drink copious amounts of alcohol without having to worry about being semi-productive the next day).

That’s why I decided to celebrate on Saturday instead (because obviously).

Over the last 23 years of my life, I’ve seen and been to a lot of places. I’ve been lucky enough that I’ve made incredible friends in all of those places, too. For my birthday this year, what I really wanted more than anything was all of my favorite people in one place. I think gifts are overrated. I don’t even need anything that I wouldn’t just buy myself. So, like any other reasonable person, I started the group text (with about 15 people…Yeah…that one was my bad, guys. That one was on me).

Anyway, I was inviting people from all over New Jersey, New York and Connecticut…so I decided on Brunch in New York City. Anyone who has ever come in contact with me knows I’m all about that brunch life and NYC seemed like the most central location for everyone. I really wanted a place that was either outside or had a big, open space with a lot of natural sunlight. Sunlight = happiness. So I decided on 44 & X.

The day was honestly a little bit crazy. We started at the asscrack of dawn and made our way into the city. Our first stop was to hit up DryBar. As much as I hate to say it, Drybar wasn’t as great as I thought it’d be. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from going; I just don’t think I’d go again unless I really needed to. After Drybar, we made our way over to Blushington...Okay, so I have things to say about Blushington. Blushington made me feel some type of way. Literally 10/10. I will forever sing their praises. I was so caught up in the day that I totally forgot to take a legitimate selfie but hopefully you guys can see my makeup in some of the pictures below. Although, they don’t even do it justice. Guess I’ll just have to go back. OH, WELL.

Okay, so in addition to not taking any selfies, I also realized I’m sort of an asshole and took literally no pictures that day at all. I’m sorry, guys. I’ve failed you all as a blogger. BUT my friends aren’t assholes and they fortunately took plenty.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

^Now that I’ve figured out how to create slideshows, I may never stop doing it. Sorry in advance.

Okay, we all know how much I love to end fashion posts by including outfit details for you guys, but unfortunately everything I’ve worn recently has sold out like wildfire, so instead I’m going to give some good alternatives:

Top: Originally from Lord and Taylor. Some alternatives include: Century 21Pilot UK, New York & Company, SilkFred, Yoins, Unique Vintage and PrettyLittleThing.

Skirts: Originally from Express. Some alternatives include: Wet Seal, Alice + Olivia Stretch-Jersey, A.L.C., Alice + Olivia Kesten, Theory and Elizabeth and James.

Boots: Ted Baker Lorca Booties (these are the same shoes, mine are just black suede).

Look Good, Feel Good

Unless you love working out, it might not always be the easiest thing to get in an hour of activity, or even 15 minutes, a day. Let’s be realistic: we all live busy lives and we all have those days. It’s so easy to put working out to the side. Other things take priority. We have families and deadlines and Fido needs to be taken to the vet.

I feel like a big part of the first couple of months of a new year is following through on your resolutions (orrrr not so much). It’s now a month and a half into 2016 and if you made working out your resolution and you might be struggling for inspiration, I thought I’d give you a reason to make working out a bit more appealing: shopping for new workout clothes, of course. It’s actually sort of amazing what getting new (workout) clothes can do for your attitude.

While on the topic of attitude, I know a lot of us probably made our new years resolutions to lose weight, start going to the gym and “to get skinny.” But, if you’ll allow me, I’d like to make a quick suggestion to edit those resolutions. Instead of losing weight, let’s change it to, “feeling good in my own skin.” Instead of go to the gym, let’s say, “live a more active lifestyle.” Instead of getting skinny, let’s realize what we’re putting into our bodies and the true value of a portion size.

Now I totally understand that creating another whole wardrobe may not be in your schedule or your budget (I am a broke 20-something, after all), but there are ways to make it a little bit easier. Scroll down for a few suggestions to make your wallet, and your body, happy.

The Classics:

Nike (I’m a huge fan of their runner’s shorts).

Under Armour (Check out some of their apps in the appstore for added inspiration. I’m obsessed with MyFitnessPal…but they have a ton more. Also make sure to sign up for their emails; they’ll send you recipes and tips to keep moving).

Christmas Outfit

This post is waaayyy overdue but I was a little overwhelmed at the end of 2015 (the year did not want to go down without a fight).

I’m going to keep this post short and sweet, just including my outfit details, because I’m working on a color spotlight blog post for you guys 🙂

Dress: Lord and Taylor. My dress is sold out but I feel like you can walk into Lord and Taylor and just find something perfect…it’s honestly the same thing with Nordstrom and Saks. The department stores may be overwhelming but they’re worth it. Similar Lord and Taylor Dresses

Drink Recipe: Holiday Sangria

Favorite Fall Find: Booties

It’s been on my bucket list since just about forever to get booties for the fall. Up until this point, I’ve only had longer boots and because I’m short, they usually tend to make me look disproportioned with skirts and dresses…which are basically my favorite things to wear. But for whatever reason, I could never pick a pair of booties that I actually liked. But this season I was determined. I needed to find a pair. I needed to find a pair now.

Recently my friend, Adam, dragged me to NYC to go shopping (I’m only kidding. I obviously went super willingly; ready to spend the entirety of my paycheck). Long story short: he convinced me to walk into Ted Baker.  Okay, disclaimer: don’t think this was one of those “it was love at first sight,” things….I only believe in that when it comes to food.

I walked in and asked the lady, “excuse me, but do you have boots?” She answered, “Of course we do! I actually just bought myself a pair yesterday!”

(I mean of course she bought herself a pair. With their discount, why wouldn’t she?!)

And then she brought me over to the boots. She showed my the boots, specifically the ones that she bought.

And then I walked out.

At this point you’re probably thinking “what the heck, I thought she bought boots” or you’re asking yourself why this blog post is still going on (I don’t really even know, tbh).

I bought the boots online the next day because I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I also couldn’t stop talking about them. That’s when you know: If you can’t stop talking about them, the love is real (I also use the methodology when trying to determine whether or not I like a man, FYI).

So yes, I bought the booties. And I’ve worn them everyday since. And I’ve never been happier. Check them out below:

Ask Me How Much I Love the 4th

I love America. I love everything about it. I love the red, the white and the blue. I just do.

Usually, I would spend the 4th with my family but since I just recently moved out of my parents’ home, I decided that maybe I’d try something new this year. Insert: my first 4th down at the beach. I know since I’m from New Jersey, it might seem weird that I’ve never spent a 4th at the Jersey shore but since my parents have a pool, I’ve never really needed the beach. But like I said, it was time for something new and I really love the beach.

Here’s how my first 4th at the beach went: I relaxed for once. I did absolutely nothing. I sat on the beach and I read my book and I did nothing. I recommend it.

The End of an Era: College

If you’ve read my blog at all this past semester, you would’ve noticed that I wasn’t posting all that much. Although yes, my classes and my internships were time-consuming (to say the least), that wasn’t exactly why I wasn’t posting. If you’ve ever graduated, whether it be college, high school or middle school, you’ll know that as you look back, you’ll realize that you’ve changed.

As my college career comes to a close, I think it’s time for me to reflect on myself.

Also, you’ll all be happy to know that I’m including a lot of different outfits for you guys (a couple formals, honors convocation, Gael Awards, my birthday, senior toasts, graduation…the list honestly goes on since this post has been in the works for a while). But before I get to the outfits, I first need to get to myself.

I can confidently say that I’m not the same person that I was as a freshman. Although I’m really not all that different at my core (I never sacrificed my beliefs, morals or ethics), I did create the person whom I want to be. I am proud of who I’ve become because I worked so hard to become her.

College has allowed me to mature and develop, both in my personality and with my style.

Here’s what they don’t tell you about college: Through all of the classes and the exams and the long hours, you’re not just building your GPA or your future. You’re building your fundamentals. Because of college, I learned what effort looked like. Anything that is worth having, takes effort..whether it be grades, friendships, relationships, working out, etc. “Nothing worth having comes easy.”

I learned that I don’t like to give up and I never will. I learned that I like challenges and that I like to be the girl that does it all and does it all well. I learned that I will never back down from something because I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it. I adapt and I do it. I enjoy helping others and being someone that others look to and go to for advice. I like taking care of others. College made me feel like a more well-rounded person; that’s what I mean when I say college gave me my fundamentals.

I learned some hard lessons. I learned what happiness truly is. I learned “to live and let god.” I found some good quotes to get me through when things just weren’t going my way (thank you, Pinterest). I got to experience so many things and crossed just as many things off of my bucket list. I had people who treated me poorly and I had people who treated me like family…I learned to love them both just the same. I learned that everything that happens, both good and bad, is part of the plan. All of these experiences are just shaping you to be who you’re meant to be. It’s just up to you which direction you’re going to go in.

These last four years haven’t been easy for me. I’m not going to lie. But you know what? At the end of that day, I know that I’m a better person because of it. I’ve learned to appreciate good things, and good people, when they happen in my life. I never thought I’d say this but I’m so lucky to have gone through all of the tough times because those tough times make the good times that much greater. So full disclaimer before you read any further: this post isn’t for me…It’s for everyone who’s impacted my life positively in the last four years. So from the bottom of my heart, and you’ll never know how much I truly mean it, Thank you!

Now that I’ve rambled and gotten all nostalgic, I think it’s time to get to my outfits.

Volleyball Formal: I’m obsessed with this dress. Not only was it fun to wear but I got to fulfill one of my lifelong goals of looking like a mermaid that night. Special appearance from Karly.

Dress: Charlotte Russe: http://www.charlotterusse.com/product/Dresses/Party-Dresses/Scalloped-Sequin-Bodycon-Dress/pc/3021/c/0/sc/3517/286321.uts

Shoes: Call it Spring. No longer available.

Honors Convocation: This dress is perfect to dress up or dress down. It’s really up to you. I wore black wedges to give it a little umph but it’s perfectly fine on its own as well. Also, say hello to my brother and sister…I may be the oldest but I certainly don’t look like it. When my sister put on my grad robe, people thought that she was the one who was graduating…story of my life.

Dress: http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress_fit-and-flare&ProductID=2000100846&VariantID=  Although my dress is sold out, Forever 21 has a lot that are very similar! I definitely suggest browsing through their site!

Gael Awards: This dress made me feel like Marilyn Monroe. In the words of Monroe herself, “You must feel attractive to be attractive.” This dress did just that for me. I don’t typically go for the low neck-line but I’m glad I did. This dress was flow-y and I just wanted to spin around in it all night! Amy and James were a few to spin along with me…what are friends for, right??

Mother’s Day: For those of you who know me, you know how close I am with my family, especially my mother. I call Mother’s Day, “let’s celebrate how awesome my best friend is,” day. There aren’t enough words I have to thank my mom (and dad) for what they’ve given me. I’m so fortunate to have two such amazing people to look up to each and every single day. I love you both so much and I know that you’ll read this post (eventually) so just know how much I love and appreciate you every single day.

Tank-top: it’s just a simple white one from The Limited. I wear it all the time. It’s super comfortable!

Skirt: Alice + Olivia Flora Metallic Tweed Mini Skirt. It’s not available anymore but here’s one that’s very similar: http://www.aliceandolivia.com/elana-mini-skirt-11.html

22nd Birthday Lunch: “I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling 22.” -Taylor Swift. This last month has been extremely emotional for me. Between work and school getting the best of me; between unforeseen complications; between getting older and graduating and losing people whom I thought I was close, I’ve really been through and I’ve really seen it all these past three months. Needless to say, I didn’t have high expectations for my birthday. I had an 8am final and we all know how badly I totally did not want to be there. But the overwhelming amount of love I received from friends and family brought tears to my eyes. I’m honestly tearing up a little bit now thinking about how fortunate I am to have such wonderful people in my life at this point in time. I want to write some of the things people sent me, not to boost my ego or prove myself to you, but to show you how much you can be affecting someone without even knowing it. I honestly had no idea how much I meant to these people; I just knew how much they meant to me.

These are only a couple of texts/emails but so many people reached out to me via Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Like I said, I was honestly blown away because I had no idea. So once again, this post is for you and thank you for all of your love and constant support.

“Happy birthday to a smart, beautiful woman that I get the chance to call one of my best friends. There has been some rough patches this year but you have raised to meet them and defeated them with class and grace. You are always there for me no matter what so here is to you, Marisa. I hope you have a lovely birthday and I was I could celebrate with you!! Love you girly! #feeling22” -Cara

“So I am going to be out of the country saving babies when you turn 22 but I don’t want you to think that I forgot because I didn’t! So congrats on graduating and HAPPY 22ND BIRTHDAY! I’m so proud of you and I’m sad I don’t get to be there and that we don’t get to graduate together. I hope you can make it to Texas! Love you and have a great weekend!” -Sara

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOVE OF MY LIFE!!! Literally cannot even begin to express how blessed I feel that you have walked into my life and have become one of my best friends. Despite everything, you’ve handled it all with such poise, grace and class. I look up to that immensely. You are incredible. I literally want to be like you. I hope you enjoy your day. You literally deserve the world.” -Ariana

“Happy birthday! It’s been a pleasure knowing you these last two years. I’m going to miss you so much next year. I hope you have an amazing day and best of luck in everything! Your future is so bright. You’re one of the nicest, most humble students on campus and you’re career-oriented and always willing to help others. I love you!” -Meral

“Happy birthday! Marisa, I don’t think you realize how you touch people’s lives…and that’s the beauty of it. You affect people’s lives for the better and you don’t even try. You just do it. You are an amazing person, you truly are. It’s been amazing being your friend since freshman year. Your smile lights up a room. You’re amazing and please don’t forget that.” – James (pictured above at Gael Awards; he used to brush and blow dry my hair freshman year for fun)!

“Marisa, happy birthday! I just wanted to take this time to tell you that I, we, recognize how much you do for Iona, especially Iona Athletics. You might not be the one getting all of the awards, but you’re always the one who is working the hardest. We just wanted you to know that we see you, we always have, and that we really appreciate it.” -Mike

“Happy birthday, Marisa! I did a little research for your birthday this year. I know how much you love pearls…and it turns out that it’s extremely fitting that you’ve chosen the pearl to be your symbol. Pearls are purported to clarify thoughts during moments of decision. Pearls symbolize purity, spiritual transformation, charity, honesty, feminine wisdom and integrity. Pearls remind us to walk with dignity. Pearls not only provide a mirror into which we see ourselves, but give us insight into how we appear to others. The ragged, rough grain of sand, transformed over time, slowly growing into an object of great value and beauty. With its humble beginning, pearls symbolize innocence and pure heart, and help us get in touch with the simple, honest things in life. I love you very much! Have a great day!” -My Aunt Nancy (I loved her note so much that I HAD to include it…because it obviously made me cry. Duh).

Just some of my best Gael Friends (Michelle, Kara, Brianne and Zoe)…Oh, and Iona College’s mascot is a Gael, hence “Gael friends.”

Tank-top: Express. Just a random color; Skirt: Love-Culture. No longer available; Shoes: Jack Rogers

Senior Formal: It was only fitting that my last final ever was the morning of senior formal. Senior formal was literally just celebrating surviving the last couple of weeks of college and finals being over. It was basically a glorified prom with provided alcohol. I decided to splurge a little bit and actually got my hair and makeup done.

Before hair and makeup:

Hair: http://www.vghairdesignstudio.com/ Ask for Carmel. I know her personally because we go to the gym together. Not only can she kick ass, but she’s a sweetheart and does an amazing job!

Makeup: https://www.benefitcosmetics.com/ Benefit was awesome. They did a great job and they were so nice! I didn’t pay for them to do my makeup; I just paid for some products after they were done. I’ll do a follow-up post on the make-up I took home!

The Big Day: Graduation

If any of you reading this are friends with me on snapchat (if not: mtmsky), then you probably saw that graduation was a day of conflicted emotions…and alcohol. First, I couldn’t wait to leave. I just wanted to get out. But as the day went on, I started to get sad…because these really were the best four years of my life. I know I said that they were tough, and they were. Most times they were really awful, but like I also said, I got some pretty great friends out of them. Here are just a couple pictures from the day.

Graduation was at MSG but unfortunately, no…we didn’t get to watch the Rangers game…even though we were pretty much separated by just a wall.

Roomies and I at Grand Central.

When we finally made it to MSG, we felt a selfie was necessary.

After graduation concluded…finally, a picture with my entire family! Then, just Dad and me.

My best friend, Melanie. This is my person. She’s listened to me cry, complain, laugh, and whatever else. She’s always there for me. There really aren’t enough good words I can say about Melanie…but I think “this is my person” covers it. Thank you for being my best friend when I least expected it…and letting me sleep over and eat ice cream until I fell asleep…also being my FMPFL 😉

It was about time a snapchat picture showed up in one of my blog posts. Some great friends and some great food: Melanie, Dylan, Peter and my entire family.

IMG_9511  IMG_9518

Curious about where we ate? Don’t worry, I gotcha covered: Marta. I must say, the head chef is pretty awesome (Disclaimer: I’m related to him…BUT I’m not saying the food was awesome just because I’m related to him. I was SERIOUSLY blown away!).

This restaurant is a great place for business dinners or grabbing drinks with friends. From when we walked in, to the time we left, Marta was constantly busy. There were hardly any seats.

This was my sister’s graduation gift to me. If you have time to read it, please, please do. She wrote this for me a full two years ago. I had no idea she even cared ahahaha Just kidding, Jenna! Love you!

I know I just threw a lot at all of you…and if you made it through the whole post, let me know so I can send you a fruit basket or something. I don’t know…I just don’t think I’d read this whole thing. So if you did, Thank you! I have a couple more posts in the works so I promise you guys won’t have to wait too much longer for another post. And I really promise that it won’t be this long, either.

Before I let you guys go, I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you one last time. Thank you, thank you, thank you (okay, maybe 3 more times). For those of who who received my notes, I meant what I said: you’ll always have a friend in me.

To the class of 2015, forever a Gael,
